No municipal tourist tax in force

At the date of this review, no municipal tourist tax in force was found for Lagos on any official source. Only a 2019 announcement about starting to draft a regulation exists, and it was not confirmed as adopted. Note: the €2/€1 figures often attributed to Lagos actually belong to the neighbouring município of Lagoa (similar name).

Not applicable — no municipal tourist tax in force at the date of this review.

Local short-term-rental rules

  • At this review, no municipal AL containment-area regulation was found for Lagos; registration follows the national prior-communication regime via the Balcão Único Eletrónico.
  • Under Decreto-Lei n.º 76/2024, municipalities may declare containment areas — confirm the current status with the Câmara Municipal de Lagos before registering.

How to register a short-term rental

  1. Gather the property's use title, the responsibility statement (termo de responsabilidade), the land registry (caderneta predial) and the tax authority activity declaration (CAE 55201 or 55204).
  2. Take out the mandatory civil-liability insurance (minimum €75,000 per claim).
  3. Submit the prior communication on the Balcão Único Eletrónico (eportugal.gov.pt), addressed to the president of the competent municipal council.
  4. Receive the registration number (RNAL/RNT), assigned automatically — it is the only valid opening title and must appear in all advertising and on booking platforms.
  5. Wait out the council's opposition window: 60 days, or 90 days in containment areas. With no opposition, the registration is confirmed.

Since Decreto-Lei n.º 76/2024 (in force 1 November 2024), AL registrations no longer expire and are again transmissible. The Extraordinary Contribution on Local Accommodation (CEAL) has been revoked.
